Bob Gumbert

Robert L. “Bob” Gumbert, 85, of Dysart, was lifted in to the arms of Christ on Tuesday, April 12, 2022, at his home surrounded by his wife and daughters. Bob was born on April 17, 1936, in Des Moines, the son of Ralph and Virginia (Bigelow) Gumbert.  He graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1954 and then received his Civil Engineering degree from Iowa State University.  Bob then went on to receive his Masters in Highway Engineering and PhD in Education also from Iowa State University.  He served his country in the United States Army.  On September 1, 1957, Bob was united in marriage to Claudette Bruce in Marshalltown.  He started the Civil Engineering Technology program at Hawkeye Community College in 1972.  He served as the Tama County Engineer for almost 30 years.  Bob was the mayor of Dysart for 11 years, Citizen of the year in 1999, was a member of the Dysart United Methodist Church, serving on many committees and taught Sunday School, was a member of numerous Civil Engineering Associations, card club, served on the FCTC Board, Lions Club, and the Dysart fire department and ambulance service.  He was a huge fan of the Iowa State Cyclones, Chicago Cubs, IH, trains, his 1947 Willy’s Jeep, and pulling the Lions Club spreader in parades.  Bob was preceded in death by his parents; a son in infancy; Robert Bruce Gumbert; and his in-laws, Robert and Louise Bruce.  Bob is survived by his wife of 64 years, Claudette of Dysart; two daughters, Bobbie (Rod) Dostart of Cedar Falls and Jenni Kugel of Dysart; a grandson, Taylor Robert Kugel; a brother-in-law, Rod (Betty) Bruce of Palm Springs, California; and many cousins and friends.  The funeral will be on Wednesday, April 20, 2022, at 10:30 AM, at the Dysart United Methodist Church with the burial to follow at Dysart Cemetery.  The visitation will be on Tuesday, April 19, 2022, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, at the Dysart United Methodist Church.
