Margaret Alcorn Young

Margaret Alcorn Montgomery Young was born on January 8, 1920, the oldest daughter of Robert and Eliza Jane (McKinley) Montgomery of rural Traer. Margaret attended Geneseo School in Tama County, where she enjoyed watching and participating in sports. She graduated from Geneseo High School in 1937 and went on to attend the Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls for one year before returning to Traer.

Margaret took employment at the Please U Café in Traer, the site now housing the Farmer’s Saving Bank. She attended the Traer United Presbyterian Church for 78 years, and it was there that she met Robert P. Young Jr. who she married on February 11, 1942. Whenever he was asked why he married Margaret, he replied, “I needed a hired man.” When asked why she married him, her quick retort was, “So I could be Young all my life!” Once married, the Young couple moved to the Young family farm southwest of town where they raised their three children. Margaret and Robert partnered to keep their livestock and grain farm running successfully, she working nearly the same number of hours in the field and at chores as he did. Under the couple’s devotion, the farm thrived and was awarded the distinction of becoming a Century farm. He passed away in 1986.

A steadfast volunteer, Margaret was a member of the church choir, the Missionary Society, Bonne Valente, the Order of Eastern Star, White shrine, Iowana Club, the Farm Bureau, Bon Homme, and most recently, was a member of the local Traer PEO women organization. Throughout her life, Margaret was devoted to the Church. She taught Sunday School and was known as a leader in church work and church-related organizations. Margaret was on the Board of Directors for Sunrise Hill Care Center for over 20 years.

Margaret enjoyed a love of basketball and baseball and making people laugh with her stories and jokes. She loved traveling frequently by bus or plane with Robert during their retirement years. She beamed with joy bouncing her push-button accordion on her knee while playing renditions of lively music. Her pantry always held at least one box of her famous homemade Scotch shortbread to share with friends and family during visits.

Margaret Young passed away on October 9, 2019 at Sunrise Hill Care Center in Traer at age 99. Those left to honor Margaret’s memory are her children, Robert Samuel (Ellen) Young, of Traer, Bonnie (Steve) Gray, of LeClaire, IA, Barbara (Gerald) Nelson, of Delmar, IA; grandchildren, Robert (Shelly) Young, Valerie (Young) Irvine, Brandi (David) Wayt, Joshua Sparks, Emily (Jeremy) Starr, Scott (Katie) Nelson; great grandchildren, Brittney (Matt) Schlichting, Robert D. Young, Sara Young, Trent Starr, Logan Starr, Elsa Holt, Isaac Nelson; great great grandchild, Amelia Schlichting; and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Robert, her parents, her brothers, Robert Montgomery and T. Samuel Montgomery, and sister Ann Wilimek.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of Sunrise Hill Care and Rehabilitation Center in Traer for their kindness and dedicated care.
