Marlene Yvonne (Bryan) Heckt

Marlene Y. Heckt, 83, died on October 1, 2020, at Sunnycrest Nursing Center. Marlene was born June 8, 1937, the daughter of Walter and Violet (Paxton) Bryan. Marlene grew up on a farm north of Toledo. She went to country school till the sixth grade then graduated from Toledo High School. She was a hard-working farm girl. Marlene started to build her own herd of milk cows and later brought them into her marriage. Marlene worked in Cedar Rapids at Square D and then Pioneer Seed Plant bagging seed corn. She kept a long-distance relationship with Marlin while he was in Korea with the Army. They soon married upon his return on September 18, 1958.They worked together to build a family farm with crop and livestock of all kinds, but her soft spot was her cattle. Marlene taught her boys Bill and Bob how to really care for them. She was also a great seamstress, gardener, baker and even did wedding cakes for people for many years. Marlene cooked and canned food to keep her family well fed. She was a very capable woman, no matter the job, she could handle it. Marlene also really loved her flowers, roses were her favorite. She also belonged to a ladies’ homemakers club. Some of the favorite things that Marlene enjoyed was Mollie B’s Polka Party, Wheel of Fortune and yes, All Star Wrestling. She was most known for being able to whip up a great meal for a bunch of men on a whim.

Marlene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Marlin Heckt; a brother, Carl Bryan; and sisters, Shirley Uchytil and Gladys Konicek.  She is survived by her sister, Marilyn Hach; two sons, Bill (Linda Meyer) Heckt of Clutier and Bob Heckt of Dysart; 2 grandchildren Tanner (Lesa) Heckt of Urbandale and Courtney (Jakeb) Cochran of Tiffin.

A visitation will be held at the Dysart Funeral Home at 9:30 AM on Tuesday, October 6, 2020 with a graveside service to follow at the Dysart Cemetery.
