Marlin Elroy Heckt

Marlin E. Heckt was born July 15, 1933, in rural Dysart on a family farm, the son of Elmer and Florance B (Grimm) Heckt. He graduated from Dysart High School in 1951. On September 18, 1958, Marlin married Marlene Yvonne (Bryan) at the Methodist Church in Toledo Iowa.

Marlin worked on the family farm till he was drafted in 1956. He spent most of his time in Seoul Korea where he worked as a military mail carrier from ship to base. Marlin was also a seaman in the Army and a member of the Fire Brigade. He met many friends that he stayed in contact for life. Marlin was discharged in San Francisco, CA and hitch hiked his way back to Iowa where he also met many wonderful people. Marlin then returned to the family farm and worked other jobs like picking up raw milk for the local dairy. He was active in farming till the Fall of 2018. He loved to visit with people and enjoyed when the neighbors would stop over. Marlin also enjoyed going to open houses and farm sales.  His CB handle was the Sod Buster because he always like to plow and work the ground. Sometimes when Marlin was in the field with his JD 4020 you could catch him over the hill in the field just talking on the CB to friends.  Marlin was always a John Deere guy and always liked to talk about his JD 3720 tractor that he mowed lawn with because it had a cab and air conditioner. Marlin said “He could be dressed up and mow lawn and never get dirty.”

Marlin, 87, died on September 25, 2020, at Sunnycrest Nursing Center.  He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Colleen. Marlin is survived by his wife, Marlene Heckt; two sons, Bill (Linda Meyer) Heckt of Clutier and Bob Heckt of Dysart; 2 grandchildren Tanner (Lesa) Heckt of Urbandale and Courtney (Jakeb) Cochran of Tiffin.
